Your new cat or kitten will need some supplies for his or her basic needs:
Always provide fresh water in a clean dish.
A sturdy, clean food dish with quality cat food is needed. Try to find out what he or she was eating before. Was it soft or dry food? Dry food is better for their teeth.
-Cats do not need milk or human food.
-Any change in diet should be done gradually to prevent stomach upset.
-Feed only the amount of food suggested on the package for your cat’s size and age. A few small meals throughout the day are preferred to one lump sum.
A clean litter box should be supplied for each cat in the household. If your house has more than one level, a litter box should be supplied for each level and one on the main level for each cat. Unscented, clumpable litter is best. Scoop out the clumps at least once a day.
If your cat has front claws, a scratching post will help to train proper scratching. Put some catnip on it and rub his paws on it. If he starts scratching somewhere else, put the post in that area and cover the other surface with thick plastic or tin foil. Window perches and cat furniture will also be appreciated by your new cat.
This is the fun part. Make or buy toys so you can play with kitty and keep him from playing with your hands or feet. A feather or crinkled balls of paper or tin foil are a few inexpensive favorites.
