The MVHS Story

The MVHS Story

Our mission is to prevent and alleviate animal suffering through shelter, adoption, education, collaboration, and community outreach; and to strengthen the relationship between people and companion animals.

The Minnesota Valley Humane Society has been serving the Greater South Metro Area since 1981. Founded by volunteers who fostered animals in their homes, they eventually raised money to purchase a shelter in 1991. MVHS currently resides in the old Burnsville City Hall, Police and Fire Station building. Since then we have been working hard to improve the lives of animals and people in our service area.

Since 1991, we have found homes for over 45,000 animals. We have no time limits for animals awaiting adoption. It is our policy to shelter and place as many animals as possible. We are proud to have one of the highest adoption rates in the country!

We believe education is important to promote healthy relationships between people and animals. We offer classes for new and struggling pet parents as well as our innovative Canine U Dog Training and offer many Humane Education programs for children and adults.
