The Minnesota Valley Humane Society has been serving people and animals since 1981. We are a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization located in Burnsville.
Our mission is to prevent and alleviate animal suffering through adoption, education, and community outreach; to support the enforcement of animal welfare laws; and to strengthen the human/animal bond.
A few of our volunteer opportunities:
- Dog Walkers
- Help make our dogs more adoptable. Spend time with the dogs walking, grooming, playing, training, etc. 6-8 hours of training required
- Front Desk/Reception
- Greet visitors,answer phones and assist potential adopters. 8-10 hours of training required
- Animal Adoption Counselors
- Greet visitors and help them choose the correct pet for them. You can choose to counsel for dogs, cats, or rabbits. 10-15 hours of training required
- Surrender Area
- Accept animals from the public and help staff with grooming and exams. 15-20 hours of training required
What it's like to work at the Surrender Desk.
- Education
- Conduct tours of the shelter to school and community groups and visit various locations to conduct educatinal programs. 8-12 hours of training required
- Pet Visitation
- Visit nursing homes with your own well-behaved pet. Your pet will need to be evaluated to enter this program. 5-8 hours of training required
- MVHS Ambassador
- Represent MVHS at pet supply stores, community events and local businesses. Your well-behaved pet may also be invited to join this program. 5-8 hours of training required
- Class Assistant
- Be a class assistant for Canine U and Pet Parent classes. Greet students and register them for class. Also help the instructor as needed. 6-8 hours of training required
- Office Help
- Assist with data entry, filing, bulk mail, and general office tasks. 3-5 hours of training required
- Transportation
- Help with our pre-adoption sterilization program by transporting animals to and from vet offices. Or, pick-up pet supplies from local stores and/or drop-off pet supplies at local food shelves. 5-8 hours of training required
- Foster Care
- Provide short term care for pregnant or special needs animals. 3-8 hours of training required
